Not So Traditional Christmas Carols…

My father loved Christmas, and threw himself into the spirit of the season wholeheartedly. This included teaching my sister and I all the old, traditional Christmas carols, which we would belt out with gusto at the top of our tiny lungs.

Our mother preferred to be our audience, though we never could understand why she giggled so much. (We thought it was because she was English.)

Our favorite carols were:

  • God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
  • The Holly and the Ivy
  • Hark the Herald Angels Sing
  • While Shepherds Watched their Flocks by Night
  • We Three Kings

When we grew older, my sister and I slowly began to realize that:

  • Satan’s pa had never gone astray, to anyone’s knowledge
  • The Holly had not bared the clown
  • God and Simpson never did reconcile
  • No self-respecting Shepherd ever washed his socks by night
  • The lights followed by the Three Kings were “perfect”: Not – alas – purple

Naturally, we corrected these embarrassingly childish mispronunciations the moment we became aware of them. It did not stop us joining our father in belting out Christmas carols every December.

Yes, good carols all – but you might want to add links for the lyrics so we can all discover Satan’s Pa and purple socks,.. er, lights.

    Luvverly blog!!!

Good suggestion, Tees. Providing they’re not under copyright, I’ll do that!

I keep forgetting that not everyone was trained in Christmas Carols 101 as much as we apparently were. :-)

This made me laugh out loud, thanks! I did have to read the words to God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen to get the one about Santa’s pa, though.

And hey, where can I get some of those purple Christmas lights?

LOL! Thanks, Cindy! I’m planning to add the rest of the carols over the course of this next week, one at a time. With my, uh… unique… original illustrations. (Hey, I looked for clip art, but no one else’s mind seems to have worked the way my mind and my sister’s did! ;) )

P.S. I bought my purple lights at Home Depot, about 2 years ago. Don’t know if they have them, this year. <:)
